Yes, you’re in your 20’s…with barely a wrinkle to worry about. HOWEVER, when it comes to skincare, this is the exact time you should start thinking about how to nurture your precious complexion. According to Dennis Gross, MD, founder of 900 Fifth Dermatology in NYC, “Women should begin being proactive about anti-aging in their 20’s. Research shows that as early as age 25, our skin’s two structural proteins decrease – collagen (which keeps it firm, taut, and resilient) and elastin (which gives skin its flexibility, enabling it to stretch out and then snap back into place).”
Preventative Maintenance is Key.
The same way you service your car for preventative maintenance, you should do for your skin – even when you’re in the pre-wrinkle, pre-fine line, and pre-sagging phase of your life. To protect your skin before indications of aging creep up, prevention is key (Let this be your mantra). You may not see the sings of aging with your naked eye, but you are still aging (Sorry).
Tips to Get Started
Not sure where to begin? We can help. Read these tips below to maintain your skin’s long-term health which you can incorporate into your skincare regimen STAT.
SPF + Antioxidants: Time isn’t the only thing going against you. There are also environmental factors such as pollution, stress, and UV rays – all of which are known to prematurely age skin. Each and every day, it is critical to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher (even if it’s not sunny out). For even better protection, consider applying an antioxidant before your sunscreen. This will help strengthen the skin’s natural protection from free radicals induced by environmental stressors.
Retinol: Widely regarded as a godsend for anti-aging, retinol is known to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots from both environmental and intrinsic aging. It can also help minimize large pores. Retinol is best applied as part of your nightly routine. *Please note, retinol is powerful, so apply with caution! Start with a lower concentration and gradually increase in frequency as tolerated.
Lifestyle Changes: Just remember, your lifestyle has a lot to do with the appearance of your skin. Always, always make sure to drink plenty of water every day to stay hydrated. Get plenty of beauty sleep. Stop smoking and drink in moderation.
Anti-Aging Treatments: There are a ton of anti-aging treatments out there, some better than others based on your age and skin requirements. For twenty-somethings, we often recommend the following skincare services as a form of preventative maintenance:
• Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin – reduces and prevents contraction-induced wrinkles
• Derma Fillers – plumps thin lips, enhances shallow contours, softens facial creases
• Micro-needling – stimulates collagen which tightens skin and improves elasticity
